Polished lacquer painting
This painting contains some of the most traditional and recognizable visual symbols of China. The whole has been segmented into several parts to give a magnifying effect to certain details. The white portions of this painting are a result of meticulous placement of bits of eggshell, and the crimson background is the color most often favored by Chinese culture.

about the artist
We are a family-operated business. My name is Chip. I’m the guy in the picture wearing the black sweater. I’m a citizen of the United States of America, and I’ve lived and worked in China for six years. Next to me is my wife Xiao Hong (also known as Scarlet to English speakers.) Next to Scarlet is our son Ming, and on my lap is our daughter Mei.
Scarlet and I run the www.lacquerandoil.com business together. We do not own a sweatshop filled with underpaid workers applying oil paint over photographs printed on canvas. We commission local professional artists with years of experience to produce your portraits by hand in their own homes and studios.
